Update: We no longer schedule outside siblings at schools. However, we do have a makeup day each fall and spring in our Sterling, VA studio where families are welcome to sign up outside siblings! If you would like to be notified of these makeup days, please join my newsletter. The dates are always announced there first!
I had so much fun with this preschool in Fairfax, and I think the children there did too! They were amaaaazing. It might be just the group of children they happened to get this year. Or the leadership is fantastic. It might be great teachers. Whatever the reason, they were just so pleasant! In fact, I asked one of the children in the middle of one morning, “do you have to be cute and have beautiful eyes to attend here?” He answered very seriously, “Yes.” I believe it! As always, I ask all of the families for permission to share their photos and a few families have allowed me to.
Preschoolers have such expressive faces. They can be so adorably serious, totally silly, and hugely happy. I often wonder if parents will be happy about some of the less traditional photos, and hope they love them as much as I do. I was so thrilled when I saw this student’s parent ordered the exuberant photo as well as the more standard photos. Isn’t she adorable no matter what she’s doing?
When I ask the families for permission to share photos, there are usually a few that I really hope will agree. This sibling pair was one of them – look at how loving they are! Although big sister attends grade school, since the preschool opted to allow outside siblings to participate, she came with her little brother at the beginning of picture day. Yes, they were as fun to photograph as it looks!
Each sibling gets an individual album, and this girl – I could photograph her all day. Isn’t she beautiful? And in the few minutes I photographed her, such a sweet, bubbly personality shone through. I certainly didn’t need to try to get her to smile – she was making me smile!
Little brother was fun to photograph too. I always aim for 2-5 different looks, but leave in multiple variations of similar photos so that parents have maximum flexibility when choosing their photos. In case parents have a specific layout in mind for wall decor, I like to present photos in both portrait and landscape orientation. I also love getting in really close to highlight those beautiful eyes, but keep wider options there too.
As I looked through my viewfinder, I thought to myself, this girl needs to be in the dictionary for “cute as a button.” Adorable! I can’t think of better glasses for her. Although it takes me a bit longer to angle children just the right way to avoid glare, I love glasses on children. They give such personality.
I never know if the glasses are an “always” or a “school only” item. One of my children only wears glasses at school. So, if the student is comfortable with it, we also take some photos without glasses. Totally different look, but still cute as a button. And this way, I give a few more options for parents.
One of the best benefits about Fine Art School portraits is that they are more than just school portraits. Families have have shared with me how they have displayed their children's images on their walls. To get some inspiration, check out my Pinterest page on wall displays.
